These SEL and Mindfulness Cards for Teachers and Parents offer evidence-based tools to help students, teachers and parents build social-emotional learning (SEL) and mindfulness skills.
SEL includes the process of cultivating self-awareness, understanding and managing one’s emotions, practicing social-awareness, developing healthy relationships, and learning to make responsible decisions.
Mindfulness is the act of practicing present moment awareness to have a more clear and focused mind. Through these fun and easy to use cards, and the accompanying guide, educators and parents have the opportunity to build inclusive and caring learning environments.
All cards are associated with Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Core Competency icons. When the cards are used with the Teaching Guide, they become a pre-k through 5th grade curriculum and can be woven throughout the school day.
This guide features a selection of 30 cards that include extensions for curriculum integration, guided discussion practices, and methods for implementing SEL and mindfulness into campuses or homeschool classrooms.
The guide also helps develop adult proficiency in SEL and mindfulness through personal and professional practice. Additionally, the guide and cards have been created through an equity lens and include exercises to strengthen diversity and inclusion.
While teachers and parents can lead students with the cards, students are also empowered to use the cards on their own or with a group.

Sarah Sampson, Cards and Guide Author
Sarah Sampson is Present Moment Labs’s Director of Mindfulness and Social-Emotional Learning. As the former Social-Emotional Learning Facilitator for Keller ISD, Sarah led the district-wide implementation of SEL and mindfulness-based activities for over 34,000 students. Sarah is trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction through the UC San Diego Medical School. As a certified social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and yoga teacher, Sarah has developed training, curriculum and workshops to empower educators nationwide.
Dr. Poonam Desai, Guide Author
Dr. Poonam Desai is a certified instructor of mindfulness, with more than 300 hours of training completed. She has worked in the fields of education and mental health for the past nine years, and is a former mental health trainer and psychologist at Momentous Institute. Dr. Desai is a licensed psychologist and a licensed specialist in school psychology in the state of Texas. Dr. Desai believes mindfulness and compassion are the two things that will change the world.
Shelley Hampe, Illustrator
Shelley Hampe is an illustrator and educator living in Dallas, Texas. When she's not getting messy creating art with her students she enjoys taking mindful breaths with her husband, two boys and rescue dog.
Dr. Chris Willard, Contributing Editor
Dr. Willard is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and lectures internationally on mindfulness and psychology. He is the author of many books including Growing Up Mindful (2016) and Raising Resilience (2017).
